Nanny

Nanny
A woman employed by a family to take care of young children, and addressed by them - often by her employers as well - by her professional title. This derives ultimately from ‘Ann’, via its pet form ‘Nan’, though there may be a link with ‘Nana’, ‘Nanna’, childish corruptions of ‘grandmother’ which are used to address that person. The nanny in A Surfeit of Lampreys by Ngaio Marsh is addressed by title by all members of the family for whom she works. Miss Marsh describes the woman concerned as ‘the quintessence of all nannies, opinionated, faithful, illogical, exasperating and admirable’. A Use of Riches, by J.I.M. Stewart has the vocative spelt as ‘Nannie’. An individual nanny may of course be known to the family by her own first name, or a nickname, especially in modern times.
